Have you ever been looking at the book jacket of a mystery book and observed the author or book was nominated for or had won an award? Who bestows the particular award, what is the award for, and how are they nominated or selected.
The Agatha Awards honor the traditional mystery—books best typified by the works of Agatha Christie—and are awarded annually by Malice Domestic, Ltd.
The Anthony Awards are given at each annual Bouchercon World Mystery Convention with the winners selected by attendees. The award is named for the late Anthony Boucher (William Anthony Parker White), well-known writer and critic from the New York Times, who helped found the Mystery Writers of America.
The Barry Awards, named for Barry Gardner, one of the most ardent and beloved ambassadors of mystery fiction, were first awarded in 1997 by Deadly Pleasures. The Barry Awards are now voted on by the readers of Deadly Pleasures and Mystery News and are presented at the annual Bouchercon World Mystery Convention.
The Crime Writers of Canada present the Crime Writers of Canada Awards of Excellence (formerly the Arthur Ellis Awards) to recognize excellence in Canadian crime writing.
Organized by the UK's Crime Writers Association, the Dagger Awards recognize excellence in crime writing. Entries are predominantly submitted by publishers and judged by industry professionals. There are eleven daggers in total,, and seven of the Daggers are for books and short stories and are judged independently by industry professionals.
Mystery Writers of America give these awards to honor the best in mystery fiction and nonfiction produced the previous year. (We list only the fiction awards.) The awards began in 1946 and are named in honor of Edgar Allan Poe.
Since 1991, the North American Branch of the International Association of Crime Writers has presented the Hammett trophy to the book of the year that best represents the conception of literary excellence in crime writing. Nominations for the Hammett Prize may be submitted by any interested party
The Tony Hillerman Prize is awarded annually to the first-time author of a mystery set in the southwestern United States. It is co-sponsored by Wordharvest and St. Martin's Press.
Two Lefty Awards are given at each annual Left Coast Crime Convention: Best Humorous Mystery, Best Historical Mystery (Bruce Alexander Memorial). The Lefty Awards are given to mystery novels that feature a humorous aspect. They are named after Lefty O’Brien, a fictional detective who was known for his wit and humour. The Lefty Awards were first given out in 2008 and are presented at the Left Coast Crime convention, which is an annual conference for mystery writers and fans.
The Simon & Schuster Mary Higgins Clark Award, established in 2001, is an American literary award, presented as part of the Edgar Awards. The award was created to honor author of suspense novels, Mary Higgins Clark. To be eligible for the Simon & Schuster Mary Higgins Clark Award, the book must be "written in the Mary Higgins Clark tradition according to guidelines set forth by Mary Higgins Clark:
The Macavity Award is named for the “mystery cat” of T.S. Eliot (Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats). Each year the members of Mystery Readers International nominate and vote for their favorite mysteries.
The Ned Kelly Awards (named for a notorious Australian outlaw of the 19th century) are presented by the Australian Crime Writers’ Association (ACWA) to promote greater recognition for crime, thriller and mystery writing in Australia.
The Shamus Award is given annually by the Private Eye Writers of America to honor excellent work in the Private Eye genre. The Prize is given annually to recognize outstanding achievement in private eye fiction. Committee members of PWA select the winners.
The International Thriller Writers Awards are awarded by International Thriller Writers at the annual Thrillerfest conferences for outstanding work in the field since 2006.
The Dilys Award was given annually from 1993 to 2014 by the IMBA to the mystery titles of the year which the member booksellers have most enjoyed selling. The Dilys award is named after Dilys Winn, who founded the first specialty bookseller of mystery books in the United States. The IMBA dissolved as a formal organization in November 2014
